Description: An excessively long or intense period of deep sadness or extreme apathy. Depression varies in length from recurring bouts of several hours to a sustained depression lasting two years or more, with recurring episodes throughout a lifetime, sometimes resulting in suicide. Other symptoms may include irritability, poor concentration, decreased appetite, social withdrawal, and an inability to experience pleasure.
